Women's Health Physiotherapy

Women's Health Physiotherapy

Our physiotherapists in Port Noarlunga can support women through all stages of life, providing guidance on safe and effective exercise during pregnancy, postpartum recovery, and menopause, as well as helping to manage musculoskeletal aches, pains and injuries.

How can physiotherapy support women's health?

Women experience many unique changes throughout life, including pregnancy, postpartum recovery, and menopause. During these stages, physiotherapy can play an important role in helping you stay active, build strength, manage musculoskeletal aches and pains, and maintain confidence in your movement and wellbeing.

Our physiotherapists can support women through these stages by assisting with tailored exercise guidance, strength and conditioning programs, management of musculoskeletal aches and pains, and providing important education and advice, to help you achieve your goals and continue to participate in the activities that matter most to you.

If your condition requires specialised pelvic health assessment or treatment that is outside the scope of our services, we can help connect you with a specialised Women’s Pelvic Health Physiotherapist to ensure you receive the best care suited to your needs.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy brings many hormonal and physical changes as your body adapts to support the growth and development of your baby. While these changes are a normal part of pregnancy, they can sometimes contribute to musculoskeletal aches and pains that impact your comfort, function, and ability to participate in everyday activities.

Common musculoskeletal concerns during pregnancy may include:

  • Lower back pain

  • Hip pain

  • Neck and upper back discomfort

  • Abdominal separation (diastasis recti)

Our physiotherapists can help manage these concerns through a combination of hands-on treatment, pain management strategies, education, and tailored exercise programs, designed to meet your individual needs. Our goal is to help you remain comfortable, active and confident throughout your pregnancy.

As your body changes, exercise may feel more challenging than it once did, and you may be unsure which activities are safe to continue. Our physiotherapists can provide individualised exercise guidance throughout your pregnancy, helping to modify activities when needed and supporting you to maintain your strength, fitness, and overall wellbeing.

Post-partum recovery

After giving birth, returning to physical activity and the activities you enjoy is an important part of supporting your health and wellbeing. Every recovery journey is different, and it can take time to rebuild strength, confidence, and fitness levels following pregnancy and childbirth.

Our physiotherapists can support your return to exercise through tailored advice and individualised exercise programs, designed to help you safely rebuild your strength, function, and confidence. We can also assist in managing common musculoskeletal concerns, such as back, neck, shoulder, hip, or wrist pain that may arise from caring for your baby.

Whether your goal is to return to walking, the gym, sport, or simply feel stronger and more comfortable in your daily activities, our physiotherapists can help guide your recovery and support you every step of the way.

Menopause and healthy ageing

Menopause is a natural stage of life that occurs as levels of the hormones oestrogen and progesterone decline. Every woman's experience is different, and the physical changes associated with menopause can influence bone health, muscle strength, joint health, energy levels, sleep, and overall wellbeing.

Regular exercise is one of the most effective ways to support your health during and after menopause. Staying active can help maintain muscle strength, support bone health, improve mobility, manage joint aches and pains, and contribute to overall physical and mental wellbeing.

Our physiotherapists can work with you to develop an individualised exercise program tailored to your goals, fitness level, and needs. We can also assist in managing musculoskeletal aches and pains, helping you stay active, confident, and independent throughout the ageing process.

Could a physiotherapist-led exercise class be right for you?

If you enjoy exercising with the support and guidance of a physiotherapist, our clinic offers a range of supervised exercise options to help you build strength, improve confidence with movement, and support your overall health and wellbeing.

1:1 Individual exercise session

Our individual exercise sessions provide a personalised approach to exercise in a private gym setting. During your 40-minute session, you will work one-on-one with a physiotherapist who will guide you through a tailored program that may include reformer Pilates, mat-based Pilates, strength training, and functional exercises designed to meet your individual goals and needs.

Small group Pilates class

For those who enjoy exercising alongside others, we also offer small group exercise classes with a maximum of three participants. The small class size allows your physiotherapist to provide individualised guidance and exercise modifications throughout the session.

Classes may incorporate reformer Pilates, mat-based Pilates, free weights, and functional exercises, with each participant following a program developed specifically for them by their physiotherapist. This approach combines the benefits of personalised exercise prescription with the motivation and social connection of a small group environment.

When might you need a Women’s Pelvic Health Physiotherapist?

While our physiotherapists can assist with many musculoskeletal and exercise-related women’s health concerns, some conditions require assessments and treatments by a specialised Women’s Pelvic Health Physiotherapist. These may include pelvic floor dysfunction, pelvic organ prolapse, bladder and bowel symptoms, pelvic pain, and internal pelvic floor assessment.

If we believe you would benefit from specialised care, we will discuss this with you and assist in arranging a referral to an appropriately trained Women’s Pelvic Health Physiotherapist, ensuring you receive the most suitable care for your individual needs.

What other health professionals can help you through these stages of life?

While physiotherapy has a very important role in supporting you through these stages of life, our clinic has multiple other health professionals which can provide you with additional support to ensure you have the best quality of life.

Nutrition and Dietetics

Nutrition plays an important role in supporting women’s health throughout all stages of life. From pregnancy and postpartum recovery, to menopause and healthy ageing, good nutrition can support energy levels, hormone health, bone health, and overall wellbeing.

Our clinic's Accredited Practising Dietitian, Emma, has a special interest in women’s health.  She focuses on practical, sustainable nutrition strategies rather than quick fixes, working closely with each client to create a plan that suits their lifestyle, supports their goals, and promotes long-term health.

Psychology

The physical, emotional, and lifestyle changes that occur throughout different stages of life can sometimes be challenging to navigate. Whether you are adjusting to pregnancy, motherhood, menopause, or other life transitions, support for your mental health can be just as important as support for your physical health.

Our psychologists provide a supportive and compassionate environment to help you manage life’s challenges, develop effective coping strategies, and improve your overall wellbeing.
