Common Presentations
Anxiety
Anxiety is a natural response to a stressful situation, and is usually associated with feeling worried or nervous. It usually occurs in new or unfamiliar situations where you may not feel capable or are uncertain of the outcome. For some people the anxious thoughts and feelings are severe, distressing and frequent and get in the way of day to day life. Some common symptoms of anxiety are difficulty concentrating, restlessness, rapid heart rate, shaking, feeling light headed, numbness, sweating or avoidance.
ADHD in Adults
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is characterised by difficulties in concentrating for long periods of time, being easily distracted, speaking before thinking and not thinking things through. The symptoms are intense and frequent enough to impact people’s broader lives, specifically their education, work and relationships. Studies show that approximately 3% of adults are diagnoses with ADHD. Treatment varies depending upon the needs of the adult and any other mental health issues they may be experiencing. Treatment can vary from psychological interventions to medications, to life style changes.
ADHD in children
ADHD begins in childhood and approximately 5% of children are diagnosed. However, the number may be higher due to the condition going unrecognised and undiagnosed, especially in girls. Many children have the symptoms persist into adulthood. The symptoms are the same as in adults, however, in children it may look like naughty or disruptive behaviour, or as though the child is a day dreamer.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
Children with ASD show differences in how they 1) interact and communicate socially with others, and 2) show their interests as they tend to be more restricted and repetitive. Children can show many differences while other children only show a few, and girls present very differently to boys. Approximately 65% of children with ASD present with an intellectual disability and then a small percentage present with above average intelligence. Around 1 in 100 people experience ASD and it is currently diagnosed at a rate of 1 to 4 in boys due to girls being missed and miss or under diagnosed. Children on the spectrum present very differently so a wide range of interventions may be required.
