CHIROPRACTIC - Scoliosis

Chiropractic @ Saltfleet Clinic

Scoliosis

Scoliosis is when the spine curves sideways, often forming an “S” or “C” shape when viewed from the back. Mild cases may go unnoticed, but some people experience stiffness, pain, fatigue or postural changes. It often develops during adolescence but can also appear in adulthood due to degeneration, injury or other conditions (Weinstein et al., 2008).

At our clinic, Chiropractic care does not aim to correct or reverse the curve itself. Instead, we focus on relieving muscle tightness, joint stiffness and movement compensations helping you move more comfortably and confidently.

How Scoliosis Can Typically Present

  1. Muscle Imbalance & Tightness – One side of the back may feel tighter or overworked, sometimes affecting shoulder, hip or rib cage alignment.

  2. Localised or Postural Back Pain – Pain from uneven stress on spinal joints or muscles, often worse with sitting, standing or activity.

  3. Fatigue After Activities – Even mild curves can cause muscle fatigue in the back and legs due to compensation.

  4. Reduced Spinal Mobility – Stiffness or restricted movement in the mid or lower back.

Causes & Common Types

  • Idiopathic Scoliosis – Most common type, often starting in adolescence with no known cause.

  • Degenerative (Adult-Onset) Scoliosis – Develops later in life due to disc thinning, arthritis or spinal degeneration.
(Weinstein et al., 2008; Negrini et al., 2018)

How Chiropractic Can Help

While Chiropractic care does not reduce the spinal curve, it can help manage symptoms and improve comfort through:

  • Spinal Manipulation & Mobilisation – Improve joint movement and reduce localised tension (Kim et al., 2015).

  • Soft Tissue Therapy – Relieve tightness and fascial restrictions on either side of the curve.

  • Exercise & Movement Strategies – Strengthen weak areas, improve mobility and address asymmetry. May include core, hip and shoulder stability work (Giannoglou et al., 2022).

  • Postural & Ergonomic Advice – Support better alignment during work, study and daily activities.

  • Referral & Co-Management – We work with Physiotherapists and specialists when needed. X-rays or specialist input may be recommended for moderate or progressing curves (Weinstein et al., 2013).
